QUESTION: What is OccultWatcher? ANSWER: OccultWatcher is free software designed to help asteroidal occultation observers to stay tuned with the latest predictions published by Steve Preston on his web site. The program monitors the site and downloads the new or updated predictions when they become available. It also provides powerful filtering that allows users to stay updated with the nearby events they are interested in. The software also has tools such as GoogleMap and GoogleEarth integration as well as it shows extra information which is not published on the Steve Preston's site. QUESTION: Can I use Occult Watcher without a permanent internet connection? ANSWER: Yes. If the internet connection is not available then Occult Watcher will not be able to synchronise its local data with the information from the internet. It will however still try to synchronize every hour. The next time your internet connection is available you can click the "Synchronise now" button to manually initiate the synchronization.
QUESTION: I don't like another program in my system tray running all the time. Can I disable the automatic start up and still benefit from Occult Watcher? ANSWER: Yes you can disable the automatic start up from the "General" options in the configurations dialog. Simply uncheck the "Start when Windows starts" check box. When you want to see the latest updates simply start Occult Watcher from the start menu and wait until it synchronizes its local data. If you don't run it often the synchronization may take a couple of minutes depending on the speed of your internet connection. I highly encourage everyone to start OccultWatcher when Windows starts and leave it running. QUESTION: I have internet with limited monthly traffic. How much internet traffic Occult Watcher generates? ANSWER: Occult Watcher generates typically 130Kb traffic per synchronization if there are no new updates. If it synchronizes hourly this makes a traffic of 90Mb per month. Daily synchronization will generate traffic of 3.7Mb per month. |
